Emigration Tax
Thinking about emigration and worried about the tax consequences in your home country or country of destination? What’s the deal with emigration taxes?
After your migration from the Netherlands, you are no longer a taxpayer in the Netherlands. However, when you are an entrepreneur, founder or business owner, you will most likely receive a protective assessment for the value of the company when you emigrate. You also need to keep paying tax in the Netherlands over domestic assets (such as immovable property) and the parts of your company that remain in the Netherlands after your emigration.

What is emigration tax and when do you have to deal with it?
If you are going to emigrate and have a significant interest (e.g. shares in a BV), you may have to deal with the so-called emigration tax. The tax authorities then pretend to sell your shares at the time of departure, so you have to pay tax on their increase in value — even if you don't actually sell them.
You will be subject to emigration tax if you:
- Leaves the Netherlands as a DGA or shareholder;
- You have a significant interest (more than 5%) in a Dutch BV;
- Whether you want to continue your business from abroad.
